David Crystal

David Crystal, a distinguished figure in the realm of linguistics, was born in 1941 in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. His formative years unfolded in Holyhead, North Wales, before his family relocated to Liverpool in 1951. There, he received his secondary education at St Mary's College. Pursuing his passion for language, Crystal embarked on an academic journey at University College London, where he specialized in English language studies. His early career was marked by significant contributions to the Survey of English Usage under the tutelage of Randolph Quirk, which laid the foundation for his future endeavors in linguistics. As a lecturer at Bangor and later at Reading, Crystal's academic influence began to take root, eventually leading to a distinguished tenure as a professor at the University of Reading.
